Learn more about each honoree below.
Mrs. Margaret Keller
Margaret Keller was born in Columbia, South Carolina, and lived there until age 13, when her family moved to Greenwood. After graduating high school, she attended Mary Baldwin College and later came to Duke University for graduate school. During that year, she first attended First Presbyterian Church, beginning a relationship with the congregation that has now spanned 65 years. After marrying, she moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, while her husband Tom completed his graduate studies, and in 1959, they returned to Durham when he joined Duke’s faculty.
Inspired by her exposure to the League of Women Voters in Ann Arbor, Margaret joined the Durham chapter as a way to learn more about her community. That decision led to years of dedicated civic engagement, including observing and reporting on local government meetings to support informed League positions. She spent countless hours attending meetings of the County Commissioners and a special committee addressing the future of a new hospital and the property where Lincoln Hospital once stood. While many involved in those efforts are no longer with us, Margaret accepts this recognition in honor of all the citizens who understood the importance of those decisions and worked to ensure the Durham community was informed and engaged.
Mr. Philip A. Harewood
Philip Anthony Harewood is a visionary leader whose decades of service have profoundly shaped Lincoln Community Health Center and the Durham community. Over a distinguished 30-year tenure, he served as Chief Financial Officer, Chief Information Officer, and ultimately Chief Executive Officer, guiding the organization through significant growth, technological advancement, and expanded community partnerships. His leadership strengthened Lincoln’s mission to deliver high-quality, compassionate care, particularly to the community’s most vulnerable populations, while solidifying its role as a trusted healthcare anchor.
Beyond Lincoln, Mr. Harewood’s impact extended to state, national, and international levels through board service, policy contributions, and healthcare leadership. From his early career in New York to executive and consulting roles across the Caribbean and Latin America, he consistently demonstrated a commitment to equity and excellence in healthcare. Above all, he takes greatest pride in his family, whose support has been central to his journey. His legacy reflects a lifetime of service, integrity, and lasting community impact.
